Mullet's

We've spent our fair share of time exploring river towns along the Mississippi and Mullet's definitely has the riverside roadhouse vibe going on. Located at 1300 SE 1st in Des Moines, Mullet's offers an amazing view of Principal Park and the Des Moines river.

We're not sure if the place is named after the fish or hairstyle, but the decor is heavy on classic celebrity mullets.

The multi-page menu offers everything from soups and salad, burgers and dogs, to a variety of specialty sandwiches and pizza. They even have frog legs and jambalaya on the dinner menu. There is a kids menu and Mullet's offers some excellent breakfast items on the weekend.

I went with the Slider Trio - a cheeseburger, BBQ Bacon cheeseburger and Italian sausage with marinara and mozzarella. The potato salad was great, but with bacon in it, how can you go wrong.

Grant had the Cajun PoBoy - deep-fried shrimp and crawfish with a spicy remoulade on the side.

Our son-in-law, Jason, had the Blazin' Popcorn Chicken PoBoy with extra spicy breading.

We also shared an appetizer of Sweet Po-tator Tots, (no photo, I forgot) that are served with a sweet marshmellow cream - very tasty.

There is a full bar, lots of beer and wine, and some interesting sounding specialty frozen drinks.

It was only 40 degrees outside and even though we were all excited about how 'warm' it was, we weren't able to take advantage of the awesome deck and patio area. We're already making plans to come back here on a sunny spring day to have a cold beverage and take in the view of downtown Des Moines. I'm thinking one of those frozen Rum Runners is in my future.

Mullet's is definitely a keeper.
