G. Mig's 5th Street Pub

On a chilly, windy, and rainy Memorial Day Weekend, we ventured out to Valley Junction to try to catch a little music that was a part of the Smokin' in the Junction event. Because of the aforementioned wind and rain, we decided that it might be nice to eat inside - so we headed into G. Mig's 5th Street Pub.

Located at 128 5th Street in West Des Moines, G. Mig's Pub has done some serious remodeling after taking over the former Giff Wagner's Pub - new floors, new bathrooms, a new oak bar, tons of new flat screens - but the most exciting for us was the all new kitchen! Owner George Migliero is now able to cook up some awesome food.

The place was packed when we arrived about 11:45 am, but we snagged two seats at the comfy bar. A quick minute later, we were sipping on some beverages and perusing the breakfast menu.

Grant started off with a Bloody Mary - a big, nicely spiced cocktail with the surprise of pickled asparagus as a garnish.

I went with a refreshing screwdriver.

The menu at G. Mig's Pub features weekly lunch and dinner specials, some interesting appetizers (New England crab cakes, the 5th Street Quesadilla, and a Mexican Shrimp Cocktail), a nice variety of sandwiches, salads, and some excellent homemade soups.

Breakfast is served until about 12:30pm on the weekends. The menu isn't extensive, but has all of your breakfast favorites like eggs, omelets, meats, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, and pancakes.

Grant ordered one of the most popular items, Migsie's Burrito - it's a jalapeno-cheddar tortilla stuffed (and I mean REALLY stuffed) with chorizo, eggs, hash browns, cheese, avocado, chiles, and onions. It's a flavor packed sensation which makes the sour cream and salsa served on the side sort of an after thought. Very tasty.

I ordered the breakfast plate of 2 scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast. The bacon was spectacular and when we inquired where they got their bacon, we were told they order it in special from Webster City. I would seriously go back just for more of that bacon. However, the toast was off the hook too - big, thick slices of buttery goodness.

Service was excellent, as well. From the moment we sat down at the bar, the friendly staff kept us in drinks and extra napkins, were willing to answer any menu questions, and were happy to change our TV to the Cubs game. Can't beat that.

Bottom line, this updated version of a longtime neighborhood bar and grill is definitely worth a visit. We're already planning to return for lunch or dinner - the fresh ingredients and the fact that they really care about their food makes G. Mig's 5th Street Pub a standout in central Iowa.

Let us know if you've visited G. Mig's and what your favorite menu item is - I want to know what to order next time we walk in their door!
