El Chisme

If you're looking for a Mexican-Italian hybrid restaurant in the Des Moines area, El Chisme in Valley Junction has you covered. Chef Jesus Ojeda started his unique eatery in a strip mall on Merle Hay Road, but is now located at 225 Fifth Street in West Des Moines, in the heart of Valley Junction.

The menu is quite extensive, featuring both their familiar Mexican specialities and hearty Italian fare. Everything is authentic with fresh ingredients and homemade touches. We ordered up a margarita on the rocks and tried to decide what to order.

The restaurant is a nice open space, with a large bar area. They feature several flavors of margaritas and many Mexican and other imported and domestic beer. They also have a short wine list.

We had a late Sunday lunch so we missed the crowds, but the dining area has plenty of space, even for large groups.

With his culinary academy background, Chef Ojeda knows his way around a kitchen. Everything we tasted was fresh and flavorful. We really enjoyed the queso dip that came with warm tortilla chips.

And look, it's time for another margarita!

The fish tacos were very tasty - firm, fresh fish expertly cooked and perfectly seasoned. Served with a mound of rice and good Mexican beans, it was a filling and enjoyable meal.

The burritos are huge - this one was stuffed with spicy chorizo, tomato, lettuce and fresh cilantro. The flavors meld together to give you an authentic taste of Mexico.

We didn't try any of the Italian menu items this visit, but isn't that a great reason to go back to El Chisme? We hear the pizza is some of the best in town.

El Chisme also provides catering, so contact them if you need further information. Let us know what your favorites are from El Chisme in the comments, we'd love to hear from you.
