A Saturday with Grant

Finding myself with a free Saturday while My Good Wife Amy was working, I decided to attend the World Food Festival held in the East village in downtown Des Moines.
I had a few other food related stops along the way. The first was at Hockenbergs, located at 6000 Aurora Avenue in Des Moines (just west of the Hobby Lobby and Felix and Oscars on Merle Hay Road).
They carry a wide array of food service equipment, small wares and supplies. The store is open to the public and it is a good opportunity to pick up some commercial quality goods at a decent price. The hours are M-F 8A-5P, Saturday 9A-Noon. It's a cooks dream store, fun to just look at all of the neat stuff that's available.
As long as I was in the neighborhood, I stopped at La Tapitia 2 at 3504 Merle Hay Rd.
We always get our limes and some other fresh produce at Mexican Grocery stores, as the price and quality are very good.
On to the World Food and Music Festival!
The event was held on September 22-23 this year. The location is in the Historic East Village on East Locust Street.
More than 35 international food vendors were part of this year's World Food Festival, as well as a variety of arts and crafts vendors, live music, international beer and wine offerings, special cooking demonstrations and contests. It is a celebration of the cultural diversity of the people of Iowa, showcasing the food and music of people from around the world that have made their homes here.
I wandered around endlessly deciding what to try. So many unique choices.
I finally settled on the Korean Kimchee Taco with spicy pork.
Spicy pork on fresh corn tortillas with Kimchee, one of my favorite foods. Very nice indeed.
I made another stop at Allspice, 400 East Locust Avenue for some needed spices. They sell high quality spices, herbs, rubs, blends, olive oils and vinegars. (See post)
And finally, a stop at The New Oriental Food Store, around the corner at 515 East Grand, before heading home, inspired with new food ideas.
A fun Saturday morning in my book.
