Fat Tuesday Restaurant

Mardi Gras may only come around once a year, but thanks to Fat Tuesday restaurant you can enjoy the flavors of New Orleans all year long. Located on the south side of Des Moines at 6112 SW 9th, Fat Tuesday offers many southern favorites that you just don't find anywhere else.
Gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee and po' boys are all standouts on the menu, plus you'll find alligator, oysters, frog legs and catfish too. If you're new to cajun food, try the special samplers of gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etoufee and red beans & rice for just $1 each.
Prices are reasonable and Fat Tuesday does offer some specialty beers and frozen drinks, in addition to the usual domestic beers and wines from Summerset Winery.
On our recent visit we were very impressed with the quality and authenticity of the food. We tried a variety of menu items and all were fresh and hot with that cajun kick.
Grant had a big bowl of gumbo that was full of big chunks of smoked sausage, shrimp and veggies.
He also enjoyed an oyster po' boy. Crispy seasoned breading with the special Fat Tuesday sauce, it was a big helping of southern goodness.
I tried a sampler of the jamabalaya - nice and spicy, it was very flavorful and just the right amount to get a good taste.
I chose catfish and cajun fries for my lunch and I'm so glad I did. I love catfish, and the catfish at Fat Tuesday is awesome. Crispy cornmeal dusted breading, tasty white fish, it was sooo good. Served with spicy fries it's the perfect combination.
After such delicious entrees, we decided it would be silly to pass on dessert. Sweet potatoe pie sounded pretty good and it was! Rich, creamy filling with a touch of cinnamon, great homemade crust, it was definitely a winner.
And though we knew we would be stuffed, our waiter smoothly talked us into trying a piece of their homemade bread pudding, one of Grants' favorites. Chock full of raisins and spices, it was a huge piece of old-fashioned dessert. It was so worth it.
So if you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary for your next dining adventure, head on down to Des Moines' south side and try Fat Tuesday restaurant. They sure put a lot of love into their food and you won't be disappointed.
Let us know if you've eaten at Fat Tuesday and what your favorite menu items are - we're heading back there for sure and need to know what to try next!
