Going Back to Mexico

We missed our annual trip to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, this year, and I've sure been missing it! So I decided to repost this write-up on the awesome food we eat there - for such a small island, there are so many choices of where to eat. From tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurants to fancy places and all of the delicious street food, the choices are amazing. So enjoy this foodie excursion to one of my favorite places in the world!

One of the best parts of our vacations in Mexico is the food. Since our focus here is on Iowa food, I thought I would make a separate section for our posts on Mexico so just those that are interested could read about our trip. This little island, 5 miles long by a 1/2 wide, serves up some of the greatest food we've had anywhere. There are so many great restaurants that it was hard to choose which one to try next. So here's our Mexico's Greatest Hits of food!

Huevos Rancheros

Shrimp Cocktail

Breaded Fish Fillet

Breakfast Cazuela

Pollo Torta - Chicken Sandwich

Chile Relleno

Breaded Fish Fillet

Garlic Shrimp

Pork Chunks

Breaded Fish Fillet (can you guess what Amy's favorite food is?? It was sooo good)

Mixed ceviche

Chicken Tacquito

Grilled whole red snapper

Beef, green pepper and onion pizza

Fredy's pork chop - it's the best on the island

Like I said, we had some great food. More detailed posts will be up soon, but that's a quick tour of the best dishes we had during our 2 weeks in the Mexican caribbean. The seafood was unbelieveably fresh and everything was so flavorful . We'll be adding a section soon if you'd like to read more in-depth posts on our trip to Isla Mujeres so... more to come!

Isla Mujeres was one of our all-time favorite vacations. We've talked about going back down there, but haven't pulled the trigger. It's been 15 years since we've been there.

We went with friends of ours who had been to Isla Mujeres a few times in the past and they had become friends with Fredy and his wife, Anna. (It's tough not to make friends with Fredy.) We took a snorkel trip the first day we were there and Anna and her mother grilled fish for us for a shoreline lunch. The last night we were there, we had dinner at Fredy's and basically had the place to ourselves. Anna brought in homemade chicken tamales that were outstanding. Fredy offered to show me the "shark" in the Sol beer logo, but I turned the bottle upside down and showed it to him. He laughed and laughed because no one had ever figured it out until he showed them. Let's say I found it on a beer-drenched afternoon sitting in a cabana on the north beach.

One of my favorite places was a little corner open air grill that had some of the best grilled pork tacos I'd had. We've eaten at La Super Rica in Santa Barbara which has the most unbelievable grilled pork tacos, but the little corner grill on Isla Mujeres came damn close. I must have eaten there five or six times while we were there - including a late night snack or two.

Ahhh.... My wife and I definitely need to go back at some point...

Yes, Road Tips, you definitely caught the Isla bug. We've been going there almost yearly since 1994 and still love the island even though it has grown and become more commercialized. The people there are so wonderful - we also have had some fun nights with Fredy. You need to go back, it's still one of the best eating spots in the world. Even the hot dogs on the carts in the evenings are the best!
