Tsing Tsao West

We were out and about on a Monday recently and needed to grab a quick lunch. Grant had his heart set on Chinese, so we ended up here, at Tsing Tsao West. Located at 3846 100th St. in Urbandale, this is just one of several Tsing Tsao locations in the metro.

It's an 'order-at-the-counter' kind of place, and when they advertise as 'Chinese Fast Food,' they're not kidding. It is seriously only a few minutes from placing your order to eating it. The service is friendly and fast, as well. Great prices, too - they always have a $5.00 lunch special and various specials for the dinner hour.

All of the lunch specials come with soup, an egg roll, a crab rangoon, fried rice, and your entree. It's definitely plenty of food. Our soup this time was Hot & Sour, but sometimes they serve Egg Drop Soup or another variety. Always hot and delicious.

Grant went with the Kung Pao beef - thinly sliced beef with lots of veggies. Of course, he spices it up with liberal doses of hot pepper sauce.

I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork - because I like 'American' Chinese food and enjoy crispy breaded chunks of pork in a sweet red sauce. It was really good, too. A huge portion and plenty of sides.

Grant also enjoyed a hot cup of tea with his lunch.

If you're looking for a more authentic Asian dining experience, there are plenty of places to try in Des Moines. But if you're more interested in a quick Chinese food lunch, Tsing Tsao is one of the better choices in the metro. Good food, lots of it, served quickly, and with a friendly smile. So happy we stopped in and we'll certainly stop in again.
