Chips Restaurant: Rotisserie and Bar - Ankeny

A few weeks back we had a free day mid-week and decided to try lunch at Chips Restaurant in Ankeny. Ankeny is the land of chain restaurants, so it's always nice to find a locally owned place to eat. Located "lake-side" at 2502 SE Tones Drive in Ankeny, Chips is close to area hotels and right off I-35.
It was a gorgeous day, so we sat out on the patio for lunch. Lots of tables out there with a view of the 'lake' - I should quit making fun of the lake, because it's actually pretty nice and has a big fountain, too.
It's a little industrial looking on the inside, but there is plenty of seating and they also have some space available for larger groups. Nice big booths, too.
On the menu you'll find lots of choices - they feature rotisserie chicken, oven-fired pizzas, sandwiches, and a new line of signature burgers. I've heard that the Spinach Artichoke Dip is highly addictive, plus they have several other appetizers, too. On Friday and Saturday nights, they offer Prime Rib and Hickory Smoked Loin Back Ribs. Daily specials and a tasty looking dessert menu round out the offerings.
We ordered a glass of wine and took our time deciding on what to order.
But look! Here comes a basket of warm and delightfully crunchy homemade chips! These are seriously tasty and you'll want to just keep on eating and eating them. Very hard to resist finishing the whole basket even though you know you've got lunch coming. Believe me.
Grant went with the Daily Special of Meatloaf, served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Moist and meaty, he thoroughly enjoyed his lunch. He ate every bite even though he knew he would be miserable - it was that good. A huge portion, too. (But is there ANY way to make gravy look appetizing in a photo?? Yikes)
I really wanted to try their rotisserie chicken, but didn't want a half chicken for lunch. So nice that they offer their juicy chicken in a quesadilla! You can get a 1/2 quesadilla with a house salad or soup and it is still plenty of food. The salad was crisp and chilled and the creamy parmesan dressing was wonderful. The quesadilla was packed with chicken, red onion, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese. Served with salsa and sour cream, this was a hot and melty delight. The chicken was so flavorful.
As we were there for lunch on a Tuesday, it wasn't overly busy - so service was great. I've heard some people say they've waited on service here, but I can't confirm that, as our server was friendly and efficient.
We really appreciate the local spots in Ankeny - as it grows and grows, hopefully we'll find many more non-chain places to try. So if you're looking for a new place for lunch or dinner in Ankeny, stop in at Chips Restaurant: Rotisserie and Bar! We'll definitely be back, as I have to try that oven-fired pizza!
