Francie's Bar & Grill

Since the early 1950's Francie's Bar & Grill has been serving up delicious food and drinks on Des Moines' south side. With a warm wood interior, it's a welcoming place for lunch or dinner. Plenty of TV's line the walls so you'll never miss the big game. We've been eating at Francie's for several years and the exceptionally friendly and competent staff keep us coming back.

The menu has a little of something for everyone. Burgers, sandwiches, a great appetizer selection, homemade soups and specialty salads are all reasonably priced under $9. The portions are plentiful and the quality is consistent. Grant likes the Con Queso Burger, a big burger served open-faced and slathered with flavorful cheese sauce. I like the Patty Melt because it's got tons of grilled onions.

But on our most recent visit I went with another of my favorites, the Buffalo Chicken Wings. You get a full pound and they've got that hot vinegary sauce down pat - truly some of the best wings in town.

Grant went with a pepper jack cheeseburger and fries. This is no fast food burger, it's a big, meaty patty with a bun that can handle the juicy burger goodness.

The most amazing thing about the great food at Francie's is that it is all prepared in what has to be one of the smallest kitchens in Des Moines - seriously, it's little. The three cooks waste no steps in there, I'm sure. Even when the place is packed, they crank out the orders.

Francie's is a compact space and does fill up pretty fast during lunch and dinner. In the warmer months they also have a nice patio area for additional seating. The full bar offers several beers on tap and a variety of specialty martinis.

Should you find yourself on Des Moines' south side, definitely stop in at Francie's. The staff will make you feel welcome and the food won't disappoint.
