Anchor Bar & Grill - Superior, WI

We're back in the swing at Iowa Foodie! Thought we'd start things off with a Road Trip post from our recent trip 'up north' where we stopped in at the Anchor Bar & Grill - always an Iowa Foodie fave. My brother brought me to the Anchor for the first time years ago, and if I'm in the area it's a no-brainer to stop in for the best burgers and fries anywhere. Located on famous Tower Ave in Superior, WI, (or infamous, depending on how well you know Superior), the Anchor Bar & Grill has been serving awesome burgers for over 35 years.

It's a small neighborhood joint, a true dive bar, and it's filled to the brim with nautical junk, plus everything else they've found. I love the decor - it's better than staring at dumb bar signs, right?

Like I said, it's small, and it gets pretty busy during meal times. You may have to wait for a table, or wait a bit for your food, but it's so worth it.

And the menu - well, the great thing is that they only serve burgers and fries - that's it. Actually, I think they'll make you a grilled cheese or a BLT, but no chicken or fish or anything else. Such a wonderful simple menu. However, they do offer 20 or so different kinds of burgers, so you've got plenty to choose from - how about a Cashew burger, Olive burger, or Jalapeno burger? The Anchor Bar & Grill has been featured on the Food Network, and have won dozens of 'best burger' awards.

We ordered up some beers, placed our order, and settled in to anticipate the juicy beef coming our way.

I kept it simple with the Bacon Burger - a juicy beef patty seared to perfection on a flat top grill, topped with American cheese and plenty of smoky bacon. And did I mention that the Anchor serves FRESH CUT FRIES??!! My absolute favorite and you get plenty of 'em. This could possibly be my most favorite meal.

Grant did the even more simple Cheeseburger and fries. But why mess with perfection, right? With plenty of napkins to sop up that juice, we both enjoyed every bite of our burgers.

It's amazing to me that they feed so many people every day on the little grill they have and one deep fryer. They have a wall mounted potato cutter that pops out the fries constantly. Even more amazing are the prices! A cheeseburger will run you $3.25, fries are $1.25 extra. The most expensive item on the menu is a triple cheeseburger (1 lb!) for $6.00 - can't beat it. Our bill for 3 beers, 2 burgers, and 2 fries was around $20. A small price to pay for a great burger, awesome fries, and the wonderful atmosphere, of course.

So if you find yourself hungry in Superior, WI, we highly recommend the Anchor Bar & Grill. Well, as long as you like burgers, anyway. Little divey neighborhood joints are the best, and this one is great.
