Limey's Pub

In England, your "local pub" is where you regularly hang out with your friends and enjoy a pint of beer and a bit of pub grub. Limey's Pub in West Des Moines is the equivalent here in the metro. Located at 1970 Grand Avenue, Ste 29, in West Des Moines, Limey's Pub is hidden back in the strip mall adjacent to the HyVee at E.P. True Parkway and Grand Avenue. It took us a bit of searching to find it, but it's a great little hideaway that features all things British.

Limey's serves a nice variety of imported beers on tap and by the bottle - over 100 choices - and they do focus on British ales from England, Ireland, Scotland, and even Belgium and Wales. A full bar ensures they can also pour your favorite cocktail.

It's an inviting space with lots of wood and a big bar to belly up to - plus plenty of tables to serve their hungry patrons. We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday and the place stayed pretty busy.

We ordered up a beverage - a Woodchuck cider for me, a pint of Smithwick's for Grant - and had a look at the menu. Both the lunch and dinner menu is pretty extensive - they serve the usual burgers, sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, appetizers - and I've heard the breakfast and bloody marys are great.

And, of course, they cook up some British Specialties! Menu items range from Meat Pies, Bangers and pasties, to Scotch Eggs and Fish & Chips. Hard to decide on what to order!

Grant decided on the Fish & Chips - an excellent choice. It was a huge piece of haddock (according to the waitress), lightly battered and fried up crispy and crunchy. And those British style fries! I think I ate more of them than Grant, fresh cut fries are my favorite and these were really good.

I was also contemplating ordering something from the British menu - until I saw a waitress walk by with a pizza for another table. If I see a good looking pizza go by it's next to impossible for me to want to order anything else - so I ordered up one of their specialty pizzas with beef, sausage, canadian bacon and bacon! It was very good - nice crust, plenty of toppings and cheese - I mean just look at it!

So if you find yourself in West Des Moines and need a good cold pint and some pub grub, go ahead and search for Limey's Pub - you'll be rewarded with just that when you find it!

Seriously, I'm going to try the British specialties next time. Plus, they have some awesome desserts, too - pies, cake, cheesecake - so save some room!

Let us know if you stop in at Limey's Pub!
