Felix & Oscar's Restaurant

I am a pizza nut, as some of you may know - every time I see a pizza go by when we're in a restaurant, I say "Mmmm, that pizza looks good," and Grant just rolls his eyes. So I couldn't believe we had never posted on the blog about one of our favorite pizza places in Des Moines - Felix & Oscar's. Located in the Hay Market Mall at 4050 Merle Hay Road, F & O's is a Des Moines tradition.

The restaurant has gone through an extensive remodel and it has really changed the look of the place. There are plenty of big booths now, but still lots of tables for bigger parties.

Tons of new flat screens mean F & O's will stay popular with the sports crowd. 

You can also sit and eat at the bar, if you'd like. 

We ordered up a pitcher of Miller Lite, because we're fancy that way, and glanced at the menu, even though we knew what we were ordering when we walked in. Felix & Oscar's is a pizza joint, but they also feature some tasty Italian Specialty Pasta Dinners, lots of great sandwiches, soup, salads, and appetizers (I love Felix fries!).

We started off with a Garden Salad, which is a huge iceberg lettuce salad served with big, giant croutons and delicious salad dressing - the homemade Creamy Parmesan for us. Nothing fancy about this salad, but the dressing is so tasty that I always get one.

If you like thin crust pizza, they have very good thin pies, and we regularly enjoy great thin crust pizzas all over Des Moines - but the star of the show at F & O's is their Chicago Style Deep Pan Pizza. It starts with a biscuit-y, buttery crust, layers on the gooey cheese, adds their signature thick pizza sauce, then your selected toppings. We ordered my favorite - Beef, Ham, & Onion - and the toppings were plentiful. The best thing about F & O's deep dish is that the crust is always done to perfection, never doughy or undercooked. It's crisp and stays that way, all the better to hold all those toppings.

Just look at that pizza goodness! - Felix & Oscar's has definitely got the deep dish pizza figured out. You do need to be patient, as it takes a bit longer to cook the deep pan pizza, but it's so worth it. And you can even call in and order ahead, if you'd like, or order online and show up just in time to dig in to your piping hot pizza.

Service has sometimes been a little lacking in the years we've been eating at Felix & Oscar's, but we've not had any complaints in the last couple of years. And our service on this last visit was fine, quick to the table, back with our drinks right away, and check backs when needed.

If it's been awhile since you've tried Felix & Oscar's, you need to check it out. You'll love the new look, and thank goodness, nothing has changed about the great pizza you'll enjoy. They also offer catering and have lots of room for a group, if you have an event planned.
