Nite Hawk Bar & Grill - Slater

We consider ourselves pretty lucky to live so close to a great little bar & grill - the Nite Hawk Bar & Grill in Slater. Located at 105 Greene Street in downtown Slater, owners Tammie and Robert Harris and Shawn Birdsall have made the Nite Hawk a 'must stop' for bicyclists on the High Trestle Trail and for all of us that live around here! The Nite Hawk features a great second bar out back with a huge patio right off the bike trail and in the warmer months, it's a hopping place - they host Moonlight Rides every month, too, and even on the more temperate winter days, you'll see bikes propped against the building.

The Nite Hawk opened in March of 2012 and it's been going non-stop ever since. The menu features some excellent appetizers (I love their wings), the usual mix of sandwiches and salads, great burgers, and the pizza is top notch. Another menu item we eat regularly is the broasted chicken - always crispy and tasty. Monday - Friday you'll find lunch and dinner specials like Beef Burgers, Meatloaf, Spaghetti, Chicken Fried Steak, and Hot Beef Sandwiches - excellent homemade food.

We were excited to see that the Nite Hawk was hosting a special (Pre-) Valentine's Day Dinner (it was on February 13) - so we signed up and headed over on a Thursday evening.

There was a nice crowd at the bar when we arrived - and oh yeah, this is a Cubs bar so you'll always find the game on at the Nite Hawk. Lots of drink specials keep the fun going, and they have bands and/or karaoke on the weekends, too.

We enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail at the bar. Jameson's on the rocks for Grant.

A refreshing Rum & Soda with a squeeze of lime for me.

The Valentine's Dinner offered two choices of entree, Ribeye Steak or a Broasted Iowa Chop. Both dinners came with salad, rolls, and dessert. All for only $20 - quite the value.

They have a yummy Creamy Parmesan salad dressing - nice, crisp, lettuce and lots of croutons. I apologize in advance for some of the 'fuzzy' photos - they had some serious mood lighting going on for this lovey dovey dinner!

These little rolls were awesome - warm and soft, perfect with the salad.

I had the ribeye steak dinner - look at the size of it! It was cooked to perfection and so flavorful. Juicy and tender, I tried my best, but still had plenty left over for another meal. The fluffy baked potato was the perfect side.

Grant enjoyed the Broasted Iowa Chop - we used to serve these when we had our restaurant and it was just as good as he remembered. That crispy broaster coating really sealed in the juices of the chop and gives it a special boost of goodness. They did a great job on this meal.

The Nite Hawk proudly serves Iowa wine from Snus Hill Winery just up the road, so we each sipped on a glass of the lovely 'Ditchweed.'

Dessert was a special treat - a huge slice of Red Velvet Cake.  Sweet and delicious, this slice of heaven was a wonderful end to our special meal. Grant managed to finish his somehow, but I had some left to bring home. It was big!

Our server, Kendra, did a great job. She was taking care of several other Valentine's diners too, but was always quick to serve our food and make sure we didn't want for a thing. We weren't rushed, and she was so nice and pleasant. Service is always spot on at the Nite Hawk.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening - great food, excellent service, and a fun atmostphere make the Nite Hawk one of our favorite places all the time, not just on Valentine's! If you find yourself in Slater, Iowa, be sure to stop in - you'll almost always find one of the owners to greet you, and an easy going, comfortable vibe.
