Saigon Market

Saigon Market, Des Moines' most comprehensive Asian grocery store, opened earlier this year at 2501 Euclid Avenue. If you love Asian food and especially cooking your own Asian specialties, you'll most likely find whatever ingredients you'll need at this large market on the corner of MLK and Euclid.
Daniel Lam, who is also the owner of China Moon restaurant in Ankeny, owns the store with other family members. It is a big, bright space that was totally renovated prior to opening.
The produce section offers a wide array of greens, bok choy and vegetables - everything you'd need to prepare an authentic dish.
There are several freezer cases that include many varieties of seafood and vegetarian options such as soy products, noodles and much more.
The shelves are packed with canned and packaged noodles, those great hot mustards, pickled items, sauces and canned vegetables.
You'll find Kim Chi, soy milk, eggs, and many other items in the fresh cold case.
And don't forget to pick up a Durian fruit - the fruit that is shaped like a hedgehog and smells like compost - they are very nutritious and they have them at Saigon Market.
Fresh seafood is also available, including this squid from New Zealand.
There are a few freshly prepared items too, like these Mung Bean Rice Cakes. Looks like there are lots of new things to taste at Saigon Market.
You can purchase a variety of cookware, including different sizes of woks, too - everything you'd need to whip up a tasty stir fry.
And rice - they have every variety of rice you could want at Saigon Market. Jasmine rice, short grain, sushi rice, long grain, rice from China, Thailand, Vietnam - it's all there.
Did I mention the excellent rice selection? Seriously, you need to check it out.
Even some Asian decor is available for purchase. And what a festive look for the market.
It is such a treat to have so many great ethnic markets in the Des Moines area. Saigon Market gives foodies in central Iowa a peek into the world of Asian cuisine and chance to try some of the specialties without the need to travel to the 'big city.' It's well worth a visit.
Let us know if you stop in at Saigon Market - and if you tried the Durian fruit!
