The Royal Mile Bar

Opened in December 2001 by those whiz kids over at Full Court Press, The Royal Mile Bar is a true neighborhood pub in downtown Des Moines.

Located at 210 4th Street, the Royal Mile offers a comfortable atmosphere, a warm wooden interior and plenty of seating for a group of friends to get together for a pint.

Love the Beefeater dude.

And be prepared to take awhile to decide what pint to have – a dizzying array of 28 ales and lagers on draft and over 120 bottled beers gives you plenty of selection. They also feature over 85 single malt Scotches, if you’re so inclined.

Grant went with a classic pint of Guinness.

I decided on a cool glass of Strongbow Cider.

The menu features several English favorites like Scotch Eggs, Bangers & Mash, and English Gala Pork Pie, but there are some very interesting sandwiches, wraps, salads and dinner entrees, as well. Shepherd’s Pie, Grilled Duck Breast, Bacon Chop – there are definitely some unexpected flavors for a pub menu.

I was leaning toward The Earl of Sandwich, a triple decker of turkey, ham, corned beef, bacon and swiss cheese. But I decided I might want to eat again sometime within the same day or two (that sandwich is huge), so I ordered the Traditional English Fish and Chips. Nice, flaky fish with a light crispy breading.

Grant had the Cornish Pasty. Ground pork, beef, potatoes, turnips and parsnips baked in a puff style pastry topped with gravy - cucumber salad on the side.

Service was great. Our food was served quickly and efficiently and our drinks refreshed as needed. Big thumbs up.

The Royal Mile Bar is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner downtown. And remember, they open early for parched shoppers on Downtown Farmer’s Market Saturdays!

If Belgian beer is more your style, the Red Monk bar upstairs serves over 90 different Belgian and Belgian style craft beers. Take a trip to merry old England and visit The Royal Mile Bar soon – a top notch menu and great beer selection will not disappoint.

I had the fish & chips yesterday; great recommendation. One of my buddies and I go out for lunch almost every Friday. Last week was my choice and we had tenderloins at Findlay's. He said next week we're going to the Mile for fish & chips. Thanks to your blog I knew just what to expect (great timing by the way). We split a Scotch Egg appetizer, the mustard was sinus clearing!
Thanks again,
Hammy

Hammy, glad you enjoyed the fish and chips too! I also love the Scotch Egg at the Royal Mile, that Coleman's mustard is killer. Thanks for the comment.
