Charlie's Filling Station

On a recent late Sunday morning we were looking for a spot to sip on a beverage while we waited for the Cubs game to start. And I'm so glad we remembered this place - Charlie's Filling Station.

Located at 305 Grand Avenue (right next to Rassmussen Bike Shop) in West Des Moines, Charlie's Filling Station is a real neighborhood gem that's been in business for over 30 years. The bartenders are friendly and pour a decent drink, plus there's a nice patio to enjoy, too.

But for me, the real star of the show is this....     

Fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice! The juicers are right up on the bar next to a pile of oranges and grapefruit. You can order yourself up a screwdriver or a greyhound and enjoy a tall, cool glass of goodness. Seriously, freshly squeezed juice in your cocktail is a treat you don't find too often.

Sherry, our fine bartender, started up the juicers and commenced to making juice.

She's a pro.

In no time at all we were enjoying that first vodka and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. It's the perfect late Sunday morning sipper.

Mmmm... mildy sweet and citrusy, but tart enough to make your lips pucker a bit.

Of course, Charlie's Filling Station has all of your favorite beer and a full bar for any and all cocktails. They fire up the grill on occasion too, so you might find some tasty food when you stop in. But do stop in and enjoy the freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice cocktails - they are very refreshing.
