Friday Food Tour 8.19.11

Friday's finally here, so let's see what's been going on in my little foodie world this week.
The biggest news is that Restaurant Week starts today! 36 local restaurants are participating in the 4th annual Restaurant Week, August 19 - 28. Every restaurant will have a special fixed-price menu for the week - you'll pay only $25 for two lunches or one three course dinner. For a list of restaurants and menus, head over to dsm magazine. I'm making my reservations today.
Des Loines recently veered off the breaded pork tenderloin path to give us a look at a more healthy alternative - the grilled turkey tenderloin. Take a peek at his review of the Iowa Turkey Federation's Turkey Grill at the Iowa State Fair.
And speaking of the State Fair, which I am so sad is coming to an end so quickly, Iowa Girl Eats had an excellent post of a day at the fair. Her photos are top notch and she enjoys many of our own fair food favorites!
If you're going through Iowa State Fair withdrawal like me, one consolation is that the Minnesota State Fair opens next week! I've been to the MN State Fair countless times and it is alllmost as good as ours. The fact that they have 'Walleye on a Stick' really makes it worth the trip north. This year they'll be featuring at least 6 new foods-on-a-stick, including chocolate-covered jalapeno peppers on-a-stick and Pizza kabobs on-a-stick. Check out all of the new MN State Fair food here.
The summer is winding down pretty quickly - school started this week! - so don't miss your chance to enjoy one of summer's best treats - a creamy milkshake. And if you want to add a little more ooomph to your next milkshake? Add some booze! Seriously, ice cream just got even better. Check out 5 boozy milkshakes for summer here.
Enjoy some food-on-a-stick this weekend - last chance!
