Angelo's on 8th

On a recent Saturday, we decided to check out the latest edition of Angelo's Pizza, aptly renamed Angelo's on 8th. Located at 1238 8th Street in West Des Moines, in the former Jimmy's on 8th location, Angelo's features the same great menu, plus some excellent new items. They opened on November 1, 2013, with the closing of the Grand Ave location.

The dining room hasn't changed a lot since the Jimmy's days, it's still a nice, big, inviting space with plenty of patio seating for the warmer months.

Angelo's on 8th has a full bar and has kept the sports bar atmosphere with plenty of flat screens to watch any and all of your favorite games. Happy Hour is Tuesday - Thursday 3 - 6, and they also have a late night Happy Hour on Tuesday - Thursday from 6 - 9 with half price appetizers. On Sunday and Monday, you can get a Large Pizza and a pitcher of beer for $19.99.

We ordered up a beverage and had a look at the menu. Favorites like Angelo's famous pizza and Cincinatti Chili are there, of course, plus salads, homemade soups, wraps and sliders, plenty of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and pasta, too! They also have daily specials Monday - Friday like meatloaf, chicken and noodles, hot beef or hot turkey, and more, and they are only $7.99.

We decided to start by sharing a fresh Caesar salad - this one had nice, crisp romaine, a flavorful Caesar dressing, lots of parmesan cheese, and plenty of crunchy croutons. Very tasty.

For his lunch, Grant went with the 5-Way Cincinatti Chili - yes, that's it under that mound of shredded cheddar! Cincinatti chili is a Mid-Atlantic style of chili con carne, and they use some unusual seasonings. It is commonly served over spaghetti or over a cheese coney, because of the thinner consistency. The 5-Way is the chili served over spaghetti with shredded cheddar, beans, and onions. And this was only a half order!

Of course, I had to have pizza - what else? They have a nice 7" individual sized pizza - so I had a thin crust with ground beef, canadian bacon, and onion. I love the Italian seasonings and the nice crunchy 'bubbles' on the crust. Very good.

Former owner Mark Nicola still manages Angelo's on 8th, and we chatted with him for a bit about baseball, the Reds, the Cubs, you know.... he's easy to spot with that Cincinatti Reds jacket he wears!

We appreciate the great service, too. Our server was quick to greet us, get us a drink, and give us plenty of time to look at the menu. Looks like they've got it all covered at Angelo's on 8th.

Damn best pizza in Des Moines. Get the Grinder Pizza or Chicken Buffalo pizza !
